The Achilles tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in the body: it connects the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles (often known as the calf), it also and the lesser known plantaris muscle to the heel bone

It is reported that the tendon is subject to loads equivalent to 4 times body weight when walking and 8 times bodyweight when running; it is therefore no surprise that it is commonly injured in sporting and non sporting activities.

The ankle is the region of the body where the leg meets the foot; the area consists of the ankle joint which is the point the tibia bone of the leg meets the talus bone of the foot.  Below the ankle joint the subtalor joint is the point at which the talus meets with the calcaneous or the heel bone.

Common injuries experienced in this area are ankle sprains, ankle joint arthritis or joint damage, and tibialis posterior tendon injuries.
