Toenails can become damaged, discoloured and misshapen due to a wide range of causes including infections, trauma and cutting the toenail incorrectly. The changes in the shape and thickness of the nails can lead to increased difficulty in cutting the nails, pain and embarrassment. What are the common causes of damaged to toenails?
- Trauma such as dropping heavy objects on the toenails or stubbing the toes
- Wearing high heeled, pointy shoes or even shoes that are not the correct length or shape for the foot
- Some infections such as fungal and bacterial infections
- A number of skin disorders such as psoriasis
- Incorrect nail cutting technique such as cutting the nails too short or down into their corners.
- Picking the nails
- Problems such as hammer or mallet toes which place the toenails at risk of higher pressures when walking and running
- Hill walking and running
- A foot type that rolls inwards excessively
- Poor circulation

What treatments can our podiatrists provide for Problem Toenails?
- Perform a physical examination to ascertain the cause of the nail condition, including full review of medical history, medication and footwear
- Cut, shape and reduce the thickness of the nails
- Demonstrate correct nail cutting technique
- Offer to test the nail for the presence of fungal infections if an infection is suspected (extra charges apply)
- Offer a local anaesthetic injection if the nail is painful when treated
- Discuss permanent nail surgery to remove a section or the whole of the nail if it is the most suitable option
- Offer advice to prevent re-occurrence of the problem
