Mortons Neuroma
A neuroma is a thickening of nerve tissue and can occur in various places within the body. Mortons Neuroma refers to a thickened and sometimes inflamed nerve found in the ball of the foot, usually between the 3rd and 4th toes but it can be present between any of the toes. Enlargement and or inflammation in the nerves can produce pain, swelling, burning and numbness.
What are the symptoms of Mortons Neuroma?
- Tingling, burning sensation
- Numbness
- Pain
What are the common causes of Mortons Neuroma?
- Compression and irritation of the nerve
- Narrow and/or tapered toe box area in shoes (toes are cramped together)
- High heels throwing weight forward causing front foot pressure
- Those suffering from bunions, hammer toe, flat feet or loose feet are more susceptible
- Repeated impact in the area especially in racquet sports and running
- Trauma to the foot through impact injury
What other complaints produce symptoms similar to Mortons Neuroma?
- Metatarsalgia (this is an umbrella term for pain in and around the metatarsal bones)
- Stress fractures
- Inter-metatarsal bursitis
- Corns / Calluses
- Capsulitis
What home treatments can you try before attending a podiatry consultation?
- Icing the area will help
- Soft fleecy dressing under the ball of the foot area
- Wearing sensible shoes, avoiding tight or narrow toes, avoiding high heels
- This condition can be a problem over a few days, weeks or permanent. It is a progressive condition (will worsen over time) and the earlier it is diagnosed and treated the easier treatment will be. In the most severe and neglected cases surgery may be needed by an orthopaedic surgeon.

- Advice on pain relief will be given such as icing and pain killers
- Professional padding of the foot to relieve pressure
- Cortisol Injection (steroid) may be suggested – our podiatrists are able to provide this
