Musculoskeletal (MSK) Consultation in Cardiff

If you have pain in your feet, ankles or legs from an injury, a painful joint, or a muscle or tendon problem that will not settle, an MSK consultation is a good place to start. At our Cardiff city-centre clinic, an HCPC-registered podiatrist will find out what is causing your pain and give you a clear plan to treat it.

What is an MSK consultation?

Musculoskeletal (MSK) problems affect the bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. In the feet and lower legs, they often show up as heel pain, ankle pain, stiff or painful joints, or aches that come on with walking, standing or exercise.

An MSK consultation is a 30-minute appointment focused on finding out what is wrong and what to do about it. We ask about your symptoms and examine your feet and legs to reach a diagnosis, then explain your treatment options.

Many problems can be diagnosed and treated from this first appointment. The consultation does not include video gait analysis, so if we need more information about how you walk or run, we may recommend a more detailed biomechanical assessment.

When should I book an MSK consultation?

It is worth booking an appointment if pain in your feet, ankles or legs has lasted more than a couple of weeks, keeps coming back, or is getting worse.

You should also book if pain is stopping you walking, working or exercising comfortably, or is changing the way you walk.

Common problems we see

  • ✓Heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • ✓Achilles tendinopathy
  • ✓Ankle sprains and instability
  • ✓Big toe joint pain and stiffness
  • ✓Bunions
  • ✓Morton’s neuroma
  • ✓Flat feet and fallen arches
  • ✓Shin splints
  • ✓Knee pain linked to how your feet work

When should I book a biomechanical assessment rather than an MSK consultation?

A biomechanical assessment offers more time to explore how your feet and legs move, including video gait analysis. It may be the right choice if:

  • ✓You would like a more detailed assessment or extra time with your podiatrist.
  • ✓You have several concerns or a more complex problem.
  • ✓You have pain when walking or running.
  • ✓You have noticed a change in the way you walk.
  • ✓Your symptoms persist or keep coming back.
  • ✓You need advice on footwear, insoles or foot orthotics.
  • ✓Our podiatrists have recommended a biomechanical assessment after an initial 30-minute MSK consultation.

Which appointment should I book?

Book an MSK consultation for your first visit. If you need to come back so we can review your progress, book an MSK follow-up. If your problem is more complex, or we need to see how you walk or run, we may recommend a biomechanical assessment with video gait analysis.

If you are not sure which to book, call 02920 644900 or email info@feetinfocus.com and we will be happy to advise.

What happens at your appointment

Your symptoms. We talk through where it hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your activity levels and any previous treatment.

A physical examination. We assess your feet, ankles and legs, including how your joints move, your muscle strength and the painful area itself.

A diagnosis and plan. We explain what we think is causing the problem and agree a treatment plan with you. Where it helps, treatment can begin at the same appointment.

What to wear and bring

Please wear or bring shorts so we can see your lower legs, and bring the shoes you wear most often, including any sports shoes.

It also helps to bring any insoles or orthotics you use, and a list of any medication you take.

Treatments we may recommend

  • ✓Strengthening and stretching exercises
  • ✓Advice on footwear and activity
  • ✓Custom foot orthotics
  • ✓Steroid or Ostenil injections
  • ✓Acupuncture and dry needling
  • ✓A biomechanical assessment, if more detail is needed
