New Patients at Our Cardiff Podiatry Clinic

If you have not been to Feet In Focus before, or have never seen a podiatrist, this page explains what to expect. There is no need for a referral if you are paying for your own treatment, and your first appointment will be with an HCPC-registered podiatrist at our clinic in Cardiff city centre.

Before your first appointment

Booking online is quick. Choose a time, enter your contact details and confirm. There is no account or password to set up. Payment is taken at the time of booking to secure your chosen appointment slot. You will then receive a confirmation email with your appointment details and a calendar file to add it to your diary. If you would rather book by phone, call us on 02920 644900.

So that we can give you the right care, we need a full picture of your health. At your first appointment we will ask you to complete our registration form and medical questionnaire, and to give us your GP’s name and address and, if you are claiming on health insurance, your insurance details. We will also go through your current and past medical history and any medication you take.

All new patients should arrive 15 minutes before their appointment so there is time to complete these forms. This information is essential for us to assess and treat you safely and effectively.

Returning patients and those receiving ongoing treatment should let us know about any changes to their health, medication or medical history. This includes recent surgery, such as a hip replacement, new heart conditions or any other health concerns.

What to bring

  • ✓A list of any medication you take
  • ✓Your insurance details and any authorisation code, if you are claiming
  • ✓A referral letter, if you have one
  • ✓The shoes you wear most often
  • ✓For a biomechanical assessment, shorts or leggings, a t-shirt, trainers and any old orthotics

What happens at your first appointment

A friendly welcome. Our receptionist will greet you and check your details. Your podiatrist will then call you into the treatment room, introduce themselves and ask what has brought you in.

Your assessment. You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks or tights. If you are having a longer postural assessment, such as a biomechanical assessment, you may be asked to change into shorts or leggings and a t-shirt, in the privacy of the treatment room.

Your treatment. Your podiatrist will assess your feet, and your posture and gait if needed, then explain what they have found and provide any treatment that is recommended. Nothing is done without being explained to you first.

Your plan and aftercare. If you need further treatment, we will talk this through with you and give you an estimate of the cost. You may be given exercises to do at home, along with verbal and written aftercare advice to keep your feet in good condition.

Which appointment should I book?

Simpler problems, such as nail problems, corns, verrucas and hard or cracked skin, can usually be assessed and treated in a 30-minute routine podiatry appointment.

Joint, muscle or postural pain and sports injuries usually need a musculoskeletal (MSK) consultation or a biomechanical assessment.

If you are not sure, call the clinic on 02920 644900 and we will help you choose. You can also see our full price list.

Arriving for your appointment

Please try to arrive on time. You are welcome to arrive early, and tea and coffee are available free of charge while you wait.

If you arrive late, your appointment may need to be shortened so that patients booked after you are not kept waiting. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, we may not be able to treat you and the appointment may be charged.

The clinic is on the ground floor, with a few steps up to the entrance, with a handrail. If steps are difficult for you, please call us on 02920 644900 before your visit. Find us at 32 Churchill Way in Cardiff city centre.

Good to know

Will my treatment hurt? Most of our treatments are not painful. If your podiatrist thinks a treatment may cause discomfort, they will discuss it with you first and can take steps to reduce it, for example using a local anaesthetic before treating a painful ingrowing toenail.

Claiming on insurance? Check with your insurer before you book. Some accept a GP referral and some ask for a consultant’s. Most insurers ask for a consultant referral for a biomechanical assessment.
